Berlin Zirkuz

About

Berliner Zirkus is located on a gently sloped strip of land between the East Side Gallery and the River Spree. The Gallery is the longest remaining section of the Berlin Wall and the River Spree separates East and West Berlin.

Our brief was to design a venue for 'non-verbal experimental theatre' to respond to the increased internationalisation of Berlin.Berlin is being reinvented; the city’s atmosphere speaks of art, new age, revival, experimentation and rebellion. People are overcoming separation by looking to a united future.

The East Side Gallery was a radical and rebellious move to ‘deface’ the Berlin wall with art and messages of hope. Echoing this, I desired this building and its performances to spark joy, relieving people of the solemnity of Berlin’s past. Hence, I chose Contemporary Circus as my form of experimental theatre.Contemporary Circus is a genre of performing arts. Usually consisting of a series of theatrical, character-driven acts. It is a mesmerising spectacle of movement, flight, and unique skill, all done with uncomprehending grace.
